Noted Educational Volunteer Remembered
Janet Wellman Richardson

Our Foundation community simultaneously grieves and honors Janet Richardson, a woman who actively supported Corning-Painted Post schools since 1949 as a volunteer in many leadership capacities. Janet died on February 24th at age 89.

In the early 1950s, she was a member of the Area Advisory Committee, which studied how to improve the area’s schools. She was president of our District’s Board of Education for 14 of the 17 years she served on it. Among the many significant accomplishments during her tenure were the establishment of Head Start and Corning Community College, and the building of East and West High Schools.

CPPSD Foundation Funds Middle School Science Programs

The Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation has made several donations to the Corning-Painted Post School District for middle school science instructional materials and supplies. FOSS, or Full Option Science System, is a researched-based, inquiry approach to science instruction which provides basic scientific knowledge, effective teaching techniques to meet the standards to meet the needs of our next generation. Students learn by doing and assessment is done by a number of different strategies. Corning Enterprises has provided grants to the Foundation to facilitate the implementation of the FOSS method for all District middle schoolers. Judith Dwyer, president of the Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation explains, “This is a cutting-edge innovation. Our middle-school students are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn through this method. (10/15/2009)

Donation in memory of Doris Bovee

The Foundation’s Music Man project has received a one thousand dollar grant from the Doris Bovee Foundation. This donation is earmarked for the repair of used instruments that have already been collected the project. Doris Bovee is remembered fondly by many people in the Corning-Painted Post district. After growing up in Addison, she was a long-time teacher at Severn. Doris was active in the Corning Teachers’ Association and served as the organizations president for several years. (8/1/2009)

S.E.R.V.U. Credit Union Grant Finances In-service Programing

During October, the Family Service Society, Inc. will provide a voluntary two hour staff development training session to assist Corning-Painted Post District staff in identifying children who may need counseling or other professional services. The sessions are being financed through a S.E.R.V.U. Credit Union grant to the Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation. (7/30/2009)

Retiring Teachers Choose Foundation As A Way to Continue to Serve Students

Two of the Corning-Painted Post School District’s recent retirees, Mary Bacalles of Gregg Elementary School and Jane Fenn of West High School have asked that donations honoring their retirements be handled by the Corning-Painted School District Foundation. Generosity, selflessness and long-term outlooks have always been characteristics of these two teachers. The use of the Foundation illustrates their positive natures. Gregg library will be the recipient of donations honoring Mary Bacalles.

High School Directories Make Great Gifts

Are you looking for a present for a graduate of East or West High? The Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation is sponsoring Harris Connect in its undertaking of publishing two alumni directories, one for East and one for West. Consider ordering an Alumni Directory as a birthday or Christmas gift. November is the expected time for the delivery of these directories. Non-alumni can order a copy of either the West or East High School Directories by calling Harris Connect’s Customer Service Department at 1-800-877- 6554.

C-PP HIGH SCHOOLS COMPILING ALUMNI DIRECTORIES

CORNING, NY – All alumni of the Corning-Painted Post high schools since 1940 are being contacted to participate in the first comprehensive alumni directories to be published for East High and for West High. The directory effort is being spearheaded by the independent, non-profit Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation, which recently partnered with Harris Connect, LLC of Chesapeake, Virginia, to compile the two separate publications. Similar directories published for Horseheads, Elmira Free Academy and other area schools have proven to be popular resources.

“Music Man” Project Provides Musical Instruments

The Corning-Painted Post School District Foundation has announced that a very successful collection of used musical instruments for its “Music Man” project has been completed. A total of 38 instruments were donated, including: 7 clarinets, 8 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 flutes, 6 trumpets, 2 cornets, 3 drum sets, 1 snare drum, 1 accordion, and 2 guitars.
